Grindrod group, is responsible for the operation of the Matola Terminal, proposes the expansion of the coal terminal in Matola, from the current 6 Mtpa to 24 Mtpa of thermal coal, sourced from various mines in the Southern Africa region.

Consultec was named by Hatch to undertaking of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)process for the Matola Port coal terminal expansion project. The EIA process was developed in 3 phases:

  • Instruction Report (screening phase) – to request the EIA process instruction and the activity categorization;
  • EPDA (scoping phase) – aiming to identify any fatal flaws and environmental impacts associated with the project, and define the scope of the environmental assessment to be carried out in the EIS phase (preparation of the Terms of Reference EIS phase);
  • EIS (impact assessment phase) – developed according to the Terms of Reference approved by MITADER.
